Here’s What You Ought To Know Before Buying Cotton Towels

Buying Cotton Towels

Whether you prefer them as travel towels or opt for a traditional peshtemal, cotton is one of the most ubiquitous fabrics in the world. It has been cultivated for thousands of years; researchers have found evidence of cotton being used in the Indus delta and in ancient Egypt. Over centuries, it has grown to become one of the most popular commercial crops – so much so, it was once called white gold. It is the primary source of livelihood for over 100 million farmers across the world.

Cotton is a breathable fabric and does not irritate the skin like synthetic fabric. Besides, it is easy to maintain and is affordable as well. But not all cotton towels are made alike. Here’s what you ought to know before buying one:

1. Remember To Buy Organic Cotton

Cotton is mostly a monoculture crop, i.e., farmers produce only one type of crop at the same place and at the same time. While this improves yield, it also leads to large scale use of herbicides, pesticides, and synthetic fertilisers. Cotton is cultivated in only 2.5% of the world’s agricultural land, but it is responsible for over 16% of insecticide use across the world. Conventionally grown cotton also carries a wide range of socio-economic risks for small farmers. Organic cotton is not only environment-friendly but safe for human use as well.

At Loopys, we use only Turkish cotton that is free from chemicals, synthetic dyes, and pesticides. You don’t have to worry about pesticide residues or chemicals such as formaldehyde used in synthetic dyes on our Turkish towels.

2. Look For 100% Cotton:

Is the towel made from cotton-blend or 100% cotton? Towels made using 100% cotton are softer than those made using blended cotton. They have a high-quality feel and are less susceptible to dye bleeding. At Loopys, we prefer 100% premium Turkish cotton because this makes our Turkish towels gentle on the skin and more breathable. Unlike blended towels, they do not aggravate skin allergies. Not to mention, 100% cotton is more eco-friendly.

We prefer Turkish cotton over Egyptian or Pima cotton because the fibres are light and dry quickly. They aren’t fluffy like Egyptian cotton but absorb water quickly. And, they are durable. It is these qualities that make our Turkish towels durable and like fine wine, better with age!
